Unai Emery SACKED: Stan Kroenke and Arsenal board have ‘sold fans a dream’, says former striker Kevin Campbell

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has launched an astonishing attack on the club’s board, saying he doesn’t trust them and that they have ‘sold fans a dream’.

Campbell joined talkSPORT on Friday morning, moments before Unai Emery was sacked as Gunners boss.

Emery’s departure signals another low point in the club’s history, with the manager axed after overseeing Arsenal’s worst run of form since 1992 when George Graham was in charge.

In 22 years as manager, Arsene Wenger never went seven games without a victory – Emery has achieved that feat in only 18 months.

Fans turned on their boss in recent weeks, but a lot of their long-standing anger has actually been directed at Arsenal’s hierarchy.

Many angry supporters have accused American owner Stan Kroenke of not caring about their beloved club and protested his ownership by refusing to turn up to Thursday night’s Europa League defeat by Eintracht Frankfurt, which had the lowest matchday attendance at the Emirates since the stadium opened in 2006.

Speaking just minutes before the announcement of Emery’s exit, Campbell said he didn’t trust Arsenal chiefs to do the right thing and give the boss the boot.

And while they have proven him wrong in that respect, he still said he has no faith in the board – accusing them of failing to fulfil their promises to supporters over the past decade.

“What’s been happening at Arsenal, it’s been coming,” he said on Friday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“If we’re brutally honest this board, since leaving Highbury, have made all these promises and haven’t backed the promises up.

“They haven’t backed Unai Emery properly and now the chickens are coming home to roost. Now they’re going to have to do something.

“I don’t trust the board, I’ve got to be honest. It seems like they’re interested in other things than the playing staff.

“There are a lot of angry Arsenal fans now because, remember, they got sold a dream leaving Highbury.

“The fantastic Emirates Stadium… they were told they were going to compete at the elite level and it just hasn’t happened.”
